How to answer “Why do you want to work here?”
Connect your interest in an employer to the actual role, relevant company information and the contribution you can make.

This question asks whether you understand the opportunity and have a reason to pursue it. A strong answer connects the employer's work, the role's responsibilities and your experience. It does not require exaggerated praise. Research enough to identify a real point of interest and be honest about what you still want to learn.
Use the employer's own information
Read the company website, role description and relevant public updates. Note what the business does and who it serves. Check that the information is current before referring to it. Avoid treating a slogan as evidence of how the team operates or repeating an unverified claim you found elsewhere.
Identify a role-specific reason
Choose something about the work that fits your interests or next step. It might be a particular customer group, a mix of commercial and operational responsibilities or an opportunity to deepen a skill. The reason should relate to this vacancy rather than to any job with a similar title.
Explain the contribution you can make
Connect the reason to relevant experience. Mention a capability that would help with one of the role's responsibilities. Keep the contribution realistic: you do not know all the team's problems yet. Explain where your experience is relevant without promising to transform the business before understanding it.
Leave room for discovery
An interview is also a chance to test your understanding. Follow your answer with an informed question where appropriate. Ask how the team handles a responsibility or what priorities the new hire would support. This keeps the conversation grounded in actual work rather than a rehearsed statement of admiration.
Practical example
Example structure: “Your role combines customer relationships with operational follow-through, which is the direction I want to develop. My experience coordinating supplier issues gives me a relevant foundation. I would like to understand how the commercial and delivery teams work together here.”
Illustrative example. Adapt it to your own experience and circumstances.Your action checklist
