How freelancers can ask for referrals professionally

Ask for freelance referrals at the right moment with a clear description of your service and a respectful, easy-to-forward introduction.

Notebook and writing materials arranged on a work desk

Referrals work best when another person can explain your service accurately and feels comfortable making the introduction. A vague request to “send anyone my way” gives them too much work. Make the request specific, time it appropriately and leave the client free to decline. The relationship matters more than extracting an immediate lead.

Wait until value is clear

Ask after a successful milestone or completed project when the client has enough experience to judge your work. Resolve outstanding issues first. A referral request should not be attached to pressure for payment or an unresolved complaint. If the engagement was not a good fit, feedback may be more useful than an introduction.

Describe the kind of project you want

Explain the service, suitable buyer and typical problem in one or two sentences. Mention any practical limits, such as availability or project type. A specific description helps the client recognise a relevant connection. Do not ask them to share private contact lists or introduce you to people who have no likely need for the work.

Make the introduction easy

Provide a short, accurate summary and one relevant portfolio link that the client may forward if they choose. Let them ask their contact whether an introduction is welcome. Avoid adding people to a mailing list simply because someone mentioned their name. Treat any contact information according to the purpose for which it was shared.

Acknowledge the effort

Thank the referrer regardless of whether a project follows. Keep updates modest and avoid sharing confidential details about the new prospect. If you offer an incentive, make the arrangement transparent to the appropriate parties. Continue doing reliable work; the best referral process cannot compensate for unclear delivery or inconsistent communication.

Make it concrete

Practical example

Example request: “If you know a small retail team planning a catalogue refresh, I would welcome an introduction. My service covers product descriptions and a consistent style guide. This sample link is easy to forward, but only if you think the fit is useful.”

Illustrative example. Adapt it to your own experience and circumstances.

Your action checklist
